Tension Headaches

Tension headaches, also called stress headaches, are the most common type of headaches occurring in adults, being either chronic or episodic in nature. Pain levels range from mild to moderate, but many experience severe tension headaches. Episodic tension headaches generally occur less than half a month’s time. Chronic headaches are more frequent, usually occurring on a daily basis for more than 15 days in a month for a period of 6 months or more. They can be ongoing for minutes or days, but most often tension headaches last for just a few hours. Episodic tension headaches come on due to stressful events while chronic tension headaches happen more frequently due to prolonged stress.

Other contributing factors that cause tension headaches are bad posture or consistent sitting or lying in uncomfortable positions, sleep deprivation, eyestrain or eye problems, hunger, fatigue, anxiety, overexertion, and even mental stress or depression. A number of issues can be considered stressors that cause tension headaches, so it’s imperative that the tension headaches are diagnosed at the root cause so that proper treatment can be prescribed.
