Herniated Discs

A herniated disc, sometimes called a slipped disc or ruptured disc, occurs when the soft tissue between the vertebrae (called discs) protrudes through a rupture or tear, or is moved out of place, causing pressure or discomfort on the nerves of the spine and back. This is called lumbar disc herniation. Disc herniation can also occur in the neck area, referred to as cervical disc herniation, which generally affects the back, the neck, and the shoulder area.

A herniated lumbar disc can cause symptoms such as stabbing pain in the lower back or legs, weakness in arms and legs, limited flexibility, trouble walking or sitting, or numbness in some areas. In some cases, however, many do not experience any symptoms from a herniated disc. While some minor herniations may heal within weeks with the use of anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, more severe herniations tend to require medical attention and proper diagnosis.
